Abstract

Preschool children are often observed to have wheezing. Many studies have demonstrated that a deficiency in vitamin D increases the chances of recurrent wheezing, while a small number of studies have found no correlation between the two. Our goal was to determine whether there is a correlation between serum vitamin D levels and recurrent wheezing in children under the age of five. This was a cross-sectional study conducted in a tertiary care hospital. Serum vitamin D levels were measured in under-five-year-oldrecurrent wheezers and age-matched control subjects. The purpose of the data analysis was to determine whether there was a correlation between recurrent wheezing and serum vitamin D levels. We found significant association was between the low serum Vitamin D levels and the recurrent wheeze (p=0.002). Larger studies with significantly more sample sizes are required.
